How I Went From Battling Acne to Loving My Skin in One Month

Before I even say anything I want to make it clear that everyone's skin and skin struggles are different. Not everything that works for me is going to work for you.

I had never dealt with acne until my junior year of high school. Being that I grew up with pretty good skin, when I developed acne it took a pretty hard hit on my confidence. Skin, in my opinion, is the first thing someone notices when they look at you and skin is simply something that you really can't hide. Even with makeup it is still going to be there. It may not be as red but the texture is still going to be there.

When I had acne I just felt like I had no control over something that truly bothered me. So the true answer to solving this problem for me was to get rid of it. (I know easier said then done but it is possible!)

Here are some pictures of my skin from before and after :

So, here are my for getting my skin that I am confident with today.

Go to the Dermatologist

While this seems like a DUH! I am a stubborn person and I also didn't really want to admit my skin was that bad. I actually first visited the dermatologist in the middle/end of my senior year. The first skin routine they had me on did lower the amount of acne I had, but it didn't rid of it. Due to this I ditched the routine they had me on which turned out to make my skin worse then ever. I eventually returned and told them about my first experience which was very helpful in them getting me onto the correct routine. This single handedly was the most powerful factor in solving my acne issues.

Be fully aware that the first routine you are on may not be the fit for you so don't hesitate to go back! I am currently using SulfaCleanse 8/4 to wash and in the mornings a Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide Gel and at night a Tretinoin Cream. I also use a Cetaphil moisturizer day and night.

Birth Control can be the answer for oily skin.

While I didn't always have acne I did always have the oiliest skin out of anyone I knew. I actually had pools of oil sitting on my skin and I would have to run to the bathroom between every class to blot down my face. On a regular visit OBG/YN she noticed how oily my skin was and said that I needed to be on birth control to get my oil production under control. While it took a few months, my skin was no longer so oily but still was healthy enough to stay moisturized. If you are already on birth control you can go in and ask for a pill that will cater more to balancing your hormones for acne!

Stop picking your skin / stop touching your skin

If you know me personally you know that I would take about 30 minutes before I went to bed every night to sit and pop my pimples. This, for some reason, was a real stress reliever for me. I also am someone who just touches their face a lot. When I sit I have my elbow on the table and hand on my face. By doing this I was putting mass amounts of bacteria on my skin. This almost instantly changed the amount of acne on my skin and the amount of acne my face was producing. This out of all things was the hardest step for me to follow but made the biggest difference.

Stop Stressing

We all have anxieties of some sort but in this day and age it seems like everyone gets stressed about everything and our skin is taking a hit. Our bodies deal with stress in all different forms but acne is a very common form. Stress wacks out our hormones and causes us to do things like picking our skin. Doing things like meditating, deep breathing, listening to a podcast or music, and exercising are all good ways to relive stress.

Stop overwhelming your skin

One of the first things I did when I started to get acne was to treat it myself. I went and purchased a Clarisonic and a whole line of Clinique acne products that included a face wash, and exfoliant, toner, spot treatment, and a cream. While I thought I was helping my skin, I was actually making it worse. I was really stressing my skin out and stripping it of what it needed to heal itself. Before I even went on any medication my dermatologist made me stop and use Cetaphil wash and moisturizer morning and night for 2 weeks to give my skin a break.

Food

Gut Health
When our gut isn't working at its best it can be releasing things such as bacteria and viruses into our body system. When the happens the rate of acne on our skin grows in size. This also leads to inflammation in our body. Things you can do to help your gut health is eating fermented foods like Kombucha, miso soup, yogurt, or sauerkraut. While I won't go into it here you should really look into food combining. It is really helpful for gut health and weight loss!

Inflammation
Our body is all connected. By putting junk processed foods into our bodies will ultimately lead to bad health including our skin. Inflammation is something that is directly tied to acne and skin health. The more inflammation we have going on in our body the more likely we are to suffer from acne. One way to reduce inflammation in our bodies are to eat whole fruits and vegetables and also to use anti-inflammatory supplements. Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory supplement that your should take along with black pepper so it can process correctly in your body.

At the end of the day our skin is all different. Some people can struggle for years without finding the right help for their acne. However,  I hope that I can help with a few tips of my own to jumpstart your journey to having skin that you love!

Love always,

H💕
